A-MARE

Why A-MARE? In Italian “amare” is the verb to love, “al mare” means to the sea; ”ma” universally alludes to “mother” and similarly, the Chinese ideogram of “sea” contains the ideogram of “mother”. Kristin Man, whose cognitive process encompasses English, Cantonese and Italian, ponders, “if to go to the sea is to love, then there is really no specific location where we are to love. If to be closer to the sea means to be closer to the source of life, then there is no better reminder of our connectedness than the ocean because of its presence and its fluidity”.

Having lived in sea places such as Hong Kong, both sides of the Atlantic, the Mediterranean, and travelled through many more and now based in Vancouver, she feels a special affinity towards the ocean overall. Realities have our ocean embody not only some of the deepest pains and pleasures but practicalities that connect us. Through A-MARE, the artist encourages the viewer to ask questions pertinent to their personal and our collective experience of what “to love” may mean— “through my artworks of love and sea shall we meet?”

tra

la sonata mia preferita e un'altra

crescendo e decrescendo

la pausa e lo staccato

suona così

tra

un flusso e un riflusso

chiarezza e ombra

la pausa e il riflusso

cosi ondeggia

tra

il lampo e il tuono

una nuvola avvolge

come la pace che interrompe

i conflitti del cuore

tra

le gocce di poggia

ogni silenzio tra le parole

oggi e domani

come gli spazi tra le dite

dopo

molto poco

un po' troppo

quando

questi, semplicemente sono

tra

un taglio e un intreccio

un intreccio e un altro

memorie e testimonianze

meditate e fate

tra

la gialla e la viola

del nostro arazzo

sia l’alba sia il tramonto della storia tradotta

Il sangue si congiunge col blu

rimane qualche questione

tra tempo e spazio

il mio mondo

si respira

nel frattempo, il suo significato

between

my favourite sonata and another

crescendo and decrescendo

the rest and the staccato

it plays like this

between

a flow and a back flow

one after another

the pause and the ebb

it undulates like this

between

the lightning and the thunder

a cloud envelops

like the peace that interrupts

the conflicts of the heart

between

the drops of rain

consonants and vowels

today and tomorrow

like the crevices alongside our fingers

after

very little

a bit too much

when

these, simply are...

between

a cut and a weave

a weave and another

memories and testimonies

meditated and made

between

the yellow and the violet

the fabric of our humanity

light of dawn and dusk

blood has laced the blue

certain questions remain

not only of time and space

my world

breathing

its meaning, in-the-meantime
